How Big is Big Enough?

Phew!  My tulip pattern works....  I'm always a doubter.

I will make a couple of changes to the final pattern to rid myself of a couple of pesky match points.

(Sorry for the fuzziness.  I took the pics with my phone.)

I like the rounded edges to of the triangle.  This feature makes matching up the edges a snap!  I had to be an accurate sewist and took good care of my outside edges so as to minimize distortion.

Hands block and tulip block sewed together as a test.  I'm not going to use the tulip block because of the changes I'm going to make to the pattern.  I'll just take it off....

I have a couple of other decisions to make.  I had thought to make the center bigger, but now I'm not so sure.  The tulips weren't as obnoxious as I thought they would be at this size.  They weren't that hard to make.  If I keep the center medallion at 26", it might be big enough.  I was thinking of making it 39".

I still refuse to make the outside feature blocks at 5".  6" might be big enough.  7" might be better.  8" might be too big.

Not to worry!  The outer section of the quilt isn't totally dependent upon any of these measurements.  "Sashing" can be adjusted to make things fit. Scale is important, though.  The final size of my quilt is still up in the air.

I have a mind to add other elements, like more blocks or quotes, beyond the individual blocks in this original quilt's outer section, also.

I'm in debate with myself.  I have a certain philosophy about combining book and movie elements together.  I am a fan of the books most of all.  I'm glad the movies were made, but I've been disappointed somewhat.  I don't know how to exactly explain myself.  I have been able to separate the books from the movie as far as my fan enthusiasm is concerned.

This is a personal choice.  To each his own!  I am not making a commentary on anyone's feelings if different from mine.

Personally, I don't think I will combine book and movie elements in the same quilt.  For instance, I'm not going to have a wolfpack tatoo or a golden onion in my "book" quilt.  Quotes would be book quotes and not movie quotes.

  1. i had to laugh when i was in a quilt store the other day; there was a young woman wearing a t-shirt that said, "the book was better" ... she said she was going to wear it to the next Twilight premiere - ha ha ha!!!

the tulip looks way cool, Shannon!

  2. Looking good Shannon. Is this hand block the same that's on the pattern page?
